As an aspiring concept artist like myself, it’s impossible to ignore the increased use of AI in creating creative media. Along with the worrying statistics of increased layoffs within the games and film’s industry.
One report issuing that 28% of global game developers, (including game concept artists) had experienced job losses in the past two years GDC Festival of Gaming, (2026) 2026 State of the Game Industry Report.state-of-the-game-industry-2026.pdf , paints and uneasy picture for students like myself if we will even have a chance of a career with concept art and design.
However, with some active research I have compiled a list in how we can stand out in our portfolios and mindsets against AI and the competitive environment of concept art roles. Giving you some tips in how you can be seen as a valuable asset to any company you apply to.
Prevent Costly Mistakes
With any project money is always a concern and the producer, art director and recruiter will always be aware of this. Having unclear or vague features in your designs could create costly mistakes for the project as the team members down the pipeline keep revising the same object or character repeatedly as well as slowing down the entire project. Making clear and readable concepts will ultimately save time and money for the project.
Callouts
Callouts can be a great method of simplifying and clarifying a design sheet by breaking down the design into its simplest forms. For example, creating a character concept and then separating the clothing and accessories to clearly define each feature will communicate your design more clearly. You can even use pictures of real-life objects as a faster way of communicating what the objects are meant to be.
Fix Inconsistencies
Ensure that the characters, environments and props all follow a consistent style throughout your concept works to prevent a disjointed or fragmented experience. If there’s one thing AI won’t be do well it’s consistency so that is one of the main features pf your work that will make you stand out against an AI generated image. If you have evident problems with consistency is your portfolio it can make you undesirable to companies.
Refine Design Input
Taking critical feedback of your art director, concept lead, etc, is an incredibly valuable skill. Changing your designs based on your feedback effectively is a part of the concept design process so if you struggle to change your work based of feedback it could make your undesirable to companies.
Being Dynamic
Following the previous point make your you are dynamic with your designs; it is easy to fall into tunnel vison of a certain concept but simply it might not be what your art director is looking for. Concept art is the generation of ideas which means you shouldn’t be afraid to explore those ideas to their fullest. Make sure to show this in your portfolio though multiple iteration sketches.
Communication
Communication is the most valuable skill as a concept artist role, communicating effectively and clearly will prevent a lot of mistakes further down the pipeline. You should be able to communicate your ideas to the rest of the team your drawings, written notes and meetings. Recruiters prefer a candidate which can communicate effectively so be sure to sound clear and confident in your interview and your own personal designs.
Placing all these tactics together in your portfolio may never reduce your uncertainty in the creative industries but it will give you a flying start in grabbing the attention of employers and showing them how you are a more valuable asset for an entry position over any AI program.
